アザミ

This plant looks like a thistle but I'm not sure of its name. Do you know?
By the way, thistle is the national flower of Scotland.

Have you ever eaten fruit from a cactus? There is a species of cactus that grows in Valencia (and other places) that bears fruit called prickly pear. It is very difficult to peel but if you are careful, you can enjoy its delicious fruit.
This one looks ripe!

お水

This is a tap for drinking water. It is available for public use. In Spain, we can see public drinking water everywhere. Isn't it beautifully decorated?

トマトジャム

Tomato jam is delicious. I've never seen tomato jam in England or Japan. Tomato jam is popular in Spain, especially on toast for breakfast. I've had tomato jam and anchovy on toast for breakfast in a bar in Spain. うまい!

Tuesday 26 April 2011

Horses are very popular pets in England and horse riding is a very popular activity. Yesterday, I saw these horses and stables next to a small house in Spain. There was heavy rain during the night so the ground is waterlogged.

危ない!

The condition of the sea was not good yesterday. The weather was cool and cloudy too so the beach was not busy.
The red flag means danger: no swimming in the sea!

This tree is tall. Do you know what tree it is?

イースター

Yesterday was Easter, an important holiday in Christendom. However, the name Easter pre-dates Christianity and is the name of an ancient goddess. Originally, Easter was a spring festival celebrated on the vernal equinox. Easter is a time of fertility and anticipation of new life. The goddess Easter took the form of a rabbit or hare and distributed eggs which represented fertility. Chicks hatch from eggs and represent new life.

Nowadays, Christians celebrate a holy day (holiday) around the time of Easter and the two festivals have combined. We can still see rabbits (the Easter Bunny), eggs and chicks used as symbols and decorations of Easter. In England, children are given chocolate eggs on Easter Sunday. In Spain, people eat a special sweet bread containing coloured eggs.

バレンシアの田舎と天気

Valencia is mainly mountainous except for a long coastline in the east. The northern part is greener than the south. The southern part is drier than the north. The climate is cool in winter, warm in spring, hot in summer and warm in autumn. The weather is usually sunny.

近所

Spanish houses are usually well kept. Spaniards are house-proud so their homes are clean, tidy and in good order.

教会

The church is traditionally the centre of life in European towns and villages. In Spain, there is usually a church in the centre of every village. Towns and cities have several churches. There are two basic designs: one is with a tower containing bells, and the other type is with a dome. The dome type usually has blue glazed tiles. Churches are beautifully decorated so I recommend looking inside.
Village church; usually painted white
Church tower illuminated at night
The church tower can be seen across the rooftops
The village church can be seen from afar

サボテン

Cacti grow in the Spanish countryside, especially in drier areas. Some cacti are very big like these I saw while walking.
It's not damaged; it often grows like this!

Singular: cactus
Plural: cacti or cactuses (there are two plural forms)

花の続き

Here are some more flowers I've found in Valencia. They were all growing in the wild. Do you know their names?
This flower smelt lovely!

市場

Markets are popular all over the world. Many places have street markets and many places have covered markets (indoor market). Most cities in Spain have a large indoor market selling fresh produce such as fruit, vegetables, meat and fish. Indoor markets are open 5 or 6 days a week. Street markets can be found at least once a week in small towns and villages too.

Thursday 21 April 2011

I've seen lots of interesting flowers recently. Springtime is the best season to enjoy the flora of Spain. I'm afraid to say I'm not a botanist so I don't know the names of all the flowers. Do you know these flowers?
